If you'd like to help a school in your community it's a simply, easy, and inexpensive process. As an individual or as a company or group you can provide manpower, recruit sponsors, and donate paint and other materials needed to complete the makeover in the selected school. The EXTREME CLASSROOM MAKEOVER advisory board can provide you with a list of past contributors in your area, suggestions for fundraising, and a comprehensive guide to planning and orchestrating the makeover.

The makeover consists of a few basic steps:

  1. Determine the target and project scope - This includes deciding which school and the amount of work to be completed as approved by the school. Estimates for materials and a design scheme also need to be established.
  2. Confirm sponsors - A sponsor or sponsors contribute by providing materials, manpower, and donations for expenses on behalf of the project. They also participate in the promotion of the event to raise community awareness and to recruit volunteers.
  3. Schedule - Select and date and realistic timeframe to complete the work. Consult with the the school, confirm with the volunteers their availability, and you're ready!

Benefits to participating are many, including:

  • Build team spirit and a sense of community responsibility within your company or organization
  • Creates an opportunity for positive PR and recognition for your efforts
  • Puts a smile on the faces of the children and proves to them that you care about the quality of their education
  • Establishes your desire to invest in the betterment of our children and the future of our communities.

The first Just Bee classroom transformation came about when Just Bee coach Saul Serna observed that, in spite of the obvious transformation in the behavior and attitude of the students, the classroom environment was still drab and disorganized. So, together with real estate broker-owner Jan Mansfield plans were made to complete an Extreme Classroom Makover! After receiving approval from the school board, design plans were made and a budget was set. Jan recruited volunteers from within her company and offered to sponsor the event, covering the expenses of the materials apart from what were donated or already available to the school.

While students were away on spring break Saul, Jan, and their team of hard working volunteers charged into the school with paint, ladders, tools, rugs, cleaning supplies and tons of enthusiasm. Parents, teachers, and members of the media came to show their support and to see for themselves what could be accomplished by working hard from early morning and into the night. On Monday morning when students returned they had no idea what was awaiting them behind the closed doors of their classrooms. Excitement mounted and cameras were on hand to capture their reaction when the makeover was revealed. Doors were opened and children and teachers entered their new classrooms wide-eyed and excited to see bright colors, new desks, organized work spaces, and cheerful decorations. There were tears of joy and some even cheered as they realized just how much their education meant, even to those outside of their classroom and school. The impact is still being felt years later, and not just by the students. "We did it for the kids," said Mansfield, "but looking back I think our benefits may have been even greater than theirs."
